The Balearic Islands are a popular holiday destination of Spain by visitors from all across the globe especially the Europeans. The archipelago of islands is very accessible to Britons and Europeans due to the close proximity of countries.

Island fiestas

Every holidaymaker on the Balearic Islands would be astounded with the myriad of fiesta offerings in the various islands. Mallorca Island celebrates the 3 Magi fiesta with an elaborate procession on December 5 every year in Palma, the capital. Then there is the fire and regional dance at the Fiesta des foguerons in early January. Horse coach processions are seen in Pollença and Muro at Plaza Vieja where participants attempt to climb up the tree at the square.

San Sebastian festival is important with numerous small fires lit around the capital whereas the February Carnival has participants in colorful masks. The Semana Santa or Easter week showcases abundant processions while the historical battle of Joan Mas comes on in the month of August.

The locals love music and art; hence, it is appropriate to welcome the Jazz festival in July before enjoying the Inca Feria in November. This popular festival is celebrated on 3 consecutive Sundays. The year is ended with a blast with the Fiesta del Estandarte or the festival of the banner on December 31st.

Menorca Island enjoys the Carnival of Mahón in the month of February and the San Juan fiesta in June. A spectacular horse performance called “Jaleo” comes on with medieval costumes that would delight any observer. Pilgrims are seen to throng the streets by the thousands.

Regional dances and music with a lot of merry making comes on with the San Juan festival, the San Martin fiesta and the Nuestra Señora de Gracia.

Ibiza welcomes the New Year with San Antonio Abad festival in January with a colorful procession of horse coaches at the festival of Saint Eulalia. Regional folklore at its best is performed on the fiesta de la Reconquista in August while sports and cultural performances fill the gap in that month.

Formentera shows reverence to the Apostle Santiago festival in honor of the island’s patron with archaic folklore and traditions.
